An Open Letter to Chewbacca Mom

Dear Mrs. Payne,

My name is Tai Bender. I am a Christian wife and mom, a worship leader and artist. I run an etsy shop and blog for a living. And I am your sister.

Like thousands of other delighted facebook readers, I clicked your video and laughed until I cried. I shared with my husband and he kept asking if I was sure your name was Candace because he was convinced I could have made that video myself. We have many similarities, you and I...similar expressions, body type and love of Chewbacca (best Star Wars character ever). We share a similar sense of humor, laugh, and tendency to clap at ourselves. I even heard you are a Bible Journaler and we were already facebook friends because of the Bible Journaling community.

These shared qualities certainly make us awesome; but above all, as I was watching your video and before you got so many wonderful opportunities to share your story, I knew that you must be a Christian. I have never met you or heard of you but that sort of joy doesnt come from the world. Your video isn't just a feel good giggle from a happy mom. You radiate the true joy of Jesus.

As Christians we learn to recognize our tribe. It is easy to see the fruit. Today I was broadcasting on my periscope channel and the discussion turned to "Chewbacca Mom". I mentioned that I wasn't sure but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Chewbacca Mom were a Christian and many said you were and that you had been sharing Jesus in your adventures. When I completed my Bible Journaling broadcast I sat down to say a prayer for you. I prayed for you to be blessed as you share the joy of the gospel. I shed a few tears of delight as I praised God knowing that all things work together for good for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. I am proud to call you a Sister in Christ! SHINE ON, CANDACE!!

❤ Tai

Romans Chapter 6 Bible Journaling - Set Free!!

Hi Friends! Today I am reading over Romans Chapter 6 and dwelling on freedom. The true freedom that only comes through Christ! The Grace of God is pouring out! Come and drink!

Romans 6

1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
Slaves to Righteousness

15 What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselvesto anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19 I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I decided to just share the whole chapter above. There isn't a lot to add to Paul's poetic writing. Free! We are so FREE! Free because if we are crucified with Christ then we are raised with Christ. Free because in our resurrection we are no longer slaves to sin. Free because without the penalty for our sin we are SET FREE with the FREE gift of God - eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord!!

I wanted to document this freedom in my Journaling Bible. I am using my Interleaved edition Bible here with a blank page between each page of text. I went all out with embellishments and watercolors! I have included a complete list of resources for you below!

Birds Don't Worry, They Sing! Psalm 104:33 - My Life Verse

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links.Growing Meadows is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to amazon.com

Hi Friends!!

I just broke in my brand new Interleaved Journaling Bible and I am absolutely in love!! The Bible features a completely blank page between every page of text. TONS of room to stamp, paint and journal. I decided to start by journaling Psalm 104:33. This is my Life Verse!

Psalm 104:33
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

I used stamps from my shop, Growing Meadows, on Etsy to help show the joy I feel reading this Psalm. I just adore the quote "Birds don't worry, they sing!" I added it to the page to remind me that God takes care of all of my smallest needs and desires. My mission is to obey and worship. I'll include a full list of resources for you below. :)

Ash Wednesday Bible Journaling and Reflection

Long time, no blog. It has been 6 weeks of crazy since Christmas but things are getting back to semi normal around here so I wanted to share my heart with you today!

It's Ash Wednesday. Many Christians observe Ash Wednesday as the beginning of Lent, a time of reflection leading up to Holy Week and the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. This is what I am reflecting today:

Ash Wednesday is a day to remember my humanness and mortality. This helps me to begin a Lenten Journey of reflection & drawing near to Jesus. I am a weak and fallen human. It is common to hear your church leaders quote Genesis 3:19 on Ash Wednesday. "...from dust you were made and to dust you will return". It is a reminder that when Adam chose to sin for the first time he traded his immortality for the life of a weak and mortal person. This was bad news for Adam and it is bad news for us. . .

But we have HOPE! Ashes are almost always put on the forehead in the shape of a cross. We are reminded that God entered our Humanness and Jesus Death and Ressurection sets us FREE from the death we deserve. We can have eternal life. Hallelujah!!

My Prayer: Jesus, as I remember my humanity, help me to recognize the HOPE you offer because of the cross! AMEN!

A full list of resources is available below if you would like to re-create this look! :)

Prepare my Heart - Bible Journaling Exodus

The First5 App has been so very touching to me this week. I am very much enjoying this journey through Exodus. Yesterday I worked through chapter 19. I love how the First5 devotional uses this chapter to point out how we are to prepare our hearts for Worship. All creation trembles in the presence of God. I want my heart to always worship with reverence, fear, trembling, hope and anticipation and I want to be ready. Absolutely ready to do His work whenever I am asked.

I journaled these pages in response to the First5 devotional from yesterday. If you don't have the app be sure to check it out. It is a brilliant way to conect with God before I ever get out of bed!

I used the NOW RESTOCKED Marquee Alpha Stamps from my Shop and lots of bright acrylics to bring this page to life and remind me to be prepared for God, always.

Happy Friday, Friends!!

Bible Journaling Exodus Freedom and Victory

Happy Wednesday!

I am so excited about these pages in my Bible because I don't usually do a 2 page spread like this. I am absolutely loving these colors. This is also the first time I have used this new stamp set from my shop. It is so perfect for Easter and Lent journaling. Can you believe Lent starts on February 10th! Its coming right up!

These pages in my Bible are based on Monday and Tuesday's readings in the First5 App. First5 is one of my favorite devotionals. It gets me in the word before I even get out of bed. You should check it out. On the right page I actually journaled the prayer that was directly on the app

"Heavenly Father, when I’m up against the attacks of the Enemy, help me to raise high the banner of Jesus’ Name as I stand firm on the Rock of my salvation. May I always remember that as I speak the powerful name of Jesus Christ, Satan has to flee. In Jesus’ name, Amen."

I stamped the word victory using acrylic paint instead of ink and outlined it with a white uniball gel pen. so fun and acrylics don't bleed like many inks can! Its like my new favorite technique! You can get your own set of stamps HERE. I have LOTS of stamps and journaling cards perfect for Bible Journaling so be sure to visit Growing Meadows on Etsy :)

Get into The Word today!

John 10:10-11 The Good Shepherd Bible Journaling

Happy Wednesday! I was so excited to work on this page in John Chapter 10! I was super excited to use the new stamps from my shop and I am in love with how the page turned out. I just adore these colors.

John 10:10-11
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

I am in such awe of my Jesus in this passage. Jesus says he came, He laid down His life for me, so that I can have life abundantly. He was willing to be tortured and die just so I can have life in Him. I don't want to take advantage of this promise. I do not want His sacrifice for me to be in vain. I want to work for Him ALWAYS. Truly abundant life comes from obedience to the Living God. When I respond to the Holy Spirit the blessing rain down, and the abundant life Jesus promises is fulfilled for me and for you. How are you responding to the Shepherd today? His voice always leads you forward on the path of abundance.

I am including a complete list of resources for you:

Wonder Working Power! Bible Journaling 1 John Chapter 1 Journaling Cards and Confetti Tape!

Happy Monday!!

Today's bible Journaling is on 1 John 1:5-7. I was excited to add a few things to this page! Some fun paint splatters, this ADORABLE Journaling Card from my Shop, song lyrics and DIY Confetti Tape inspired by Celeste @precious.to.me on instagram.

1 John 1:5-7

"This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin."

In the margin I used my Illustrated Faith Pen to scribble out the lyric of the first verse of the song. It says:

Would you be free from the burden of sin?
There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;
Would you o’er evil a victory win?
There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood.
There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder-working pow’r
In the blood of the Lamb

I think many times as Christians we don't realize the absolute power we have through our Faith. We share and inheritance with the Almighty Son of God. There is POWER in His blood and if we have accepted Him as our Savior then we are FORGIVEN and we are washed with that POWER. I want to encourage you today to walk in the light and use the influence you have as a mom, spouse, employee or volunteer to sprinkle Jesus all around! Let it shine, friends!
